Former BBC technology boss, John Linwood, was sacked last summer after his £100m project failed to move the BBC away from using video tape.
His project, the Digital Media Initiative (DMI), was set up in 2008 but was halted last year having never become “fully operational” (BBC).
Linwood, who was paid £280,000 per year for his role as technology chief at the BBC, was said by director general Lord Hall to have “wasted a huge amount of tax payers’ money” and Hall expressed “serious concerns” about how it had been managed.
Project managing can be tricky; you have to manage people and processes to get projects delivered on time and on budget. PRINCE2® is a project management methodology from AXELOS which offers a process-based approach that can be scaled and tailored to suit any particular project, regardless of situation, industry, size or type of organisation. PRINCE2 details seven processes for managing successful projects, which are described in detail in the official PRINCE2 manual.
Other project managers may prefer to use an agile approach instead, which is highly flexible and interactive. This method revolves around the acceptance that requirements are likely to change and that the most effective way of understanding change is accommodating them. Everything you want to know about Agile is a good place to start if you want to understand more about this approach.
